SVVSD bus aide gets 20 months for assault, district to pay $3.85 million in settlement

Finding out their autistic son was abused by a St. Vrain Valley bus assistant broke Kamala and Vhim Rai’s hearts and broke their trust in the institutions responsible for protecting him.

But the Longmont couple is hopeful that shedding light on what their son suffered will prevent harm to other families unaware that not all caretakers have the best intentions to their at-risk children who aren’t always able stand up for themselves.

“We understand and feel for the thousands and thousands of innocent people who cannot protect themselves, exposed every day to possible hate and abuse,” said Kamala Rai, the mother of a 21-year-old autistic man targeted by Monica Burke.
