Grand jury to review Aurora police shooting

Jefferson County prosecutors said Tuesday they have forwarded their case involving Aurora police officer Paul Jerothe.

An Arapahoe County grand jury will decide whether to indict an Aurora police officer who fatally shot an unarmed parolee.

Jefferson County District Attorney Peter Weir called the investigation extensive and diligent, and said the depth of the case prompted to call for a grand jury.

“Going to grand jury becomes more appropriate when the facts are extensive, when there are many, many witnesses, and when there are lots of factors to consider,” Weir said.

Jerothe fatally shot 37-year-old Naeschylus Carter on March 6 as officers tried to arrest him. Carter had removed a state Department of Corrections ankle monitor and was wanted for assault and several other charges.

Police and the Arapahoe County Coroner initially identified him as Naeshcylus Vinzant, but family members said he preferred the surname Carter.

Authorities haven’t said why Jerothe fired his weapon.
