Grand jury to review Aurora Police shooting
In a rare move, a grand jury will review the conduct of an Aurora officer whose conduct is creating questions.
Officer Paul Jerothe shot Naeschylus Carter on March 6 in a neighborhood on East 12th Avenue. While he didn’t have a gun, police said Carter was known to be armed and dangerous.
Carter’s death prompted protests and lead to questions about why he was shot in the chest. Starting next month, a grand jury will review the case.
“The grand jury process is best suited to provide that level of impartiality by a thorough, complete and independent review of the facts,” said Jefferson County district attorney Peter Weir. Jefferson County is handling the case because officer Jerothe was well known in the Arapahoe County district attorney’s office. Jerothe was the recipient of national award for his work during the Century 16 theater shooting.
“The family is hopeful that the grand jury process will result in an outcome that brings justice to Mr. Carter’s death,” said Siddhartha Rathod, the attorney representing Mr. Carter’s family.
