Rathod Mohamedbhai LLC’S Statement in Response to Trump Administration’s Attacks on the Legal Profession

RATHOD MOHAMEDBHAI LLC STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO TRUMP ADMINSTRATION’S ATTACKS ON THE LEGAL PROFESSION

Rathod Mohamedbhai LLC is a civil rights law firm.  We sue government officials for violating the Constitution.  We believe that holding government accountable is a solemn responsibility necessary to preserve the rights of everyone in this Country.

The need for attorneys to defend our civil rights, regardless of the popularity of those clients or their positions, is of paramount importance and in the finest traditions of our profession.  From John Adams defending the British soldiers who perpetrated the Boston Massacre, to the NAACP leading the fight to desegregate our country from Jim Crow, to the many Colorado civil rights attorneys who defended persons detained in Guantanamo during the “War on Terror,” it is a fundamental value of our nation that every person is entitled to zealous representation no matter how they are viewed by the public, no matter that the individual is adverse to the government, and no matter which political party is in power.

On March 22, 2025, President Donald Trump issued a Memorandum entitled “Preventing Abuses of the Legal System and the Federal Court.”  This Memorandum is a direct, frontal attack on the rule of law.  In his Memorandum, the President casts aside the legacy of attorneys advancing rights by challenging the status quo, and replaces it with one of fealty to the government through intimidation.  By its public statements and executive orders, the government has made clear that any challenge against it will be viewed as an abuse of the legal system.  So far, the administration has primarily targeted private corporate law firms, such as Perkins Coie.  Rathod Mohamedbhai unequivocally stands with those firms.  But even more importantly, a government that threatens the legal profession from challenging it is a government that no longer believes in the rule of law.  There is no greater threat to liberty than an unchecked government.

To be a Colorado lawyer, we must take an oath.  Among the other things, we swear to support the Constitution of the United States and the State of Colorado.  We swear to use our knowledge of the law for the betterment of society.  We swear never to reject the cause of the defenseless or the oppressed.

We will not abandon our oath.  We will not shy from holding this administration accountable.  We will not be intimidated by a governmental regime that seeks to place itself beyond scrutiny.
